1942-ci ildə Bakıda həkim ailəsində anadan olan Vasim Məmmədəliyev 1964-cü ildə BDU- nun Şərqşünaslıq fakültəsini bitirib.

1978 ci ildə professor elmi dərəcəsinə yiyələnən Vasim Məmmədəliyev 1992-ci ildə respublikanın əməkdar elm xadimi fəxri adina layiq gorülüb. 2002-ci ildə şöhrət ordeni ilə təltif edilən elm adamı, 2007-ci ildə milli elmlər akademiyasinin akademiki seçilib.

20 kitabın, 600-dən çox elmi məqalənin müəllifidir. əsərləri dünyanin 15-dən artıq ölkəsində nəşr edilib. Vasim Məmmədəliyev akademik Ziya Bünyadov ilə birgə "Qurani Kərim”i ilk dəfə azərbaycan dilinə tərcümə edib.

Akademik "Ərəb ədəbi dilində felin zaman, şəxs və şəkil kateqoriyaları", "Bəsrə qrammatika məktəbi", "Kufə qrammatika məktəbi", "Ərəb dilçiliyi" adlı əsərləri ilə ərəb dilçiliyinin kamil tədqiqatçısı kimi şöhrət qazanıb.
